The role of software in modern innovation needs no explanation. For me, it is the single largest enabler for innovation, making possible everything from SpaceX's graceful re-landing of its rockets, to the defeat of human ingenuity with AlphaGo.

Software's momentum as an innovation powerhouse and catalyst is only set to grow, with the inevitable digitisation of many core industries ascending to our doorsteps. More examples will be shared in my upcoming product book.

Aerospace in Innovation

In my view, there are few things that still truly defy the human imagination more than aircraft and spacecraft that transcend physical boundaries. For this reason, aerospace and aviation is a field that I have been enamoured with since childhood.

Aerospace companies to watch in decade 2020

I especially admire the following companies, due to their defiance of the slow-moving reputation of the aviation industry, and their practice of leveraging the latest software capabilities & technologies to create tangible product value:

• SpaceX; for significantly dropping the cost of moving payload (up to 10x), such as satellites and humans, into space
  
• Garmin; for leveraging software & human centred design to considerably improve the safety of general aviation, namely the new autoland on some brand new aircraft; which allows aircraft to land automatically in the case of pilot incapacitation, without passenger intervention
  
• Otto Aviation; for leveraging clean, aerodynamic design principles and the best in piston propulsion technology to make private business aviation considerably more affordable for the masses
  
• Boom Supersonic; for bringing back cost-efficient supersonic air travel, allowing business travellers to get from London to New York in just 3 hours
  
• Foreflight; for leveraging user experience and design principles to make life easier for pilots throughout the whole journey of a flight, from flight plan submissions to closing of flight plan.

Data in Innovation

Data is a catalyst for innovation, providing a window into previously obscured problems and opportunities. I believe the most important aspect of data analysis is in learning to ask the right questions - rather than the technical prowess of data manipulation. This is a topic I aim to expand on in my upcoming product book.

Design in Innovation

My understanding of design has evolved considerably since I worked as a part-time freelancer web designer and developer more than a decade ago. I now see design predominantly as a tool to emotionally delight customers, as well has help them achieve their functional objectives with minimum time and effort.
